Electroease is a resource to understand questions people ask when exploring for the best home stair lift, home stair lift financing options, or finding a the right home stair lift consultant. We will also explain the features of an A/C powered electric stair lift versus a battery operated stair lift, and have stories from individuals who have already discovered how a home stair lift is an excellent addition to their lives.

We understand purchasing a home stair lift is a big decision for you. You want the best stair lift, but are concerned about the price of an electric stair lift. Many people don't realize how affordable home stair lifts are, compared to moving to an assisted living center, different home, or remodeling. Make sure you understand what a home stair lift offers before you make your decision.

An electric stair lift offers many caregivers the peace of mind their loved one will be safe at home. The biggest worry of caregivers is the safety of the person in their care while the caregiver isn’t around, especially since stairs are the biggest cause for injuries in the home. A home stair lift is a great investment that will ease concern, enabling their loved ones to live a safer, more enjoyable life in their home.

Is your StairLifts for a Straight Stairway or Curved, Right Angle, or with a Landing?

We need your confirmation that your stair case is made out of wood; and also a confirmation that your bottom floor or landing is either wood, concrete or marble. (It is always recommended that the unit be installed resting on the landing; although, it is not always "wanted" or practical. Some models have a flip up bottom track that is not attached to the floor - and can also get out of the way of any passage way or door.)

curve custom bruno stairlift

custom curved stairliftBefore you buy a StairLifts, we need to know the details that will lead to your 100% satisfaction. When you call us, we are going to have to ask you several questions to determine the best unit for you.

Of course, we know the COST will always be a primary concern, whether you are a millionaire or are primarily living off social security.  We know that most people are not "rich and famous" and are most interested in getting a quality StairLifts at the most economical cost.

The first question is if you are looking for a basic straight up and down StairLifts, or a custom curve or right angle StairLifts. Then we need to know if you are planning to use your StairLifts indoors or outdoors; whether you are planning (looking up from downstairs) to put the StairLifts on the left side or the right side. We then have to ask the important questions if you have any doorways or passage ways that may be a concern. Some StairLifts come with optional flip-ups on the bottom of the stairway to avoid an opening doorway or obstruction.

exterior outdoor electric acorn stair liftsA StairLifts sits on your steps. They are basically pretty easy to install. We actually attach mounting brackets to your stairway and then put the rail on top. We then but the motorized part on top of the rail. Custom Stairway Units are a little more difficult to install; and they take more time in the fact that we have to take custom measurements for your stairway. The price of the custom stairway that make custom StairLifts is also usually two to three times more expensive that the more simple, straight StairLifts. The StairLifts all fold up when not in use; the seat and footrest, to take up less than 14" of room when not in use.  Bruno has a new optional feature that can electrically elevate the seat and foot rest.

People often want to know who makes the best stair lift.  Electroease will leave that decision up to you. We do, however, recommend you talk to the best stair lift experts here at Electroease. We are your source for the best stair lift information, presented in an unbiased fashion to help you make the best stair lift decisions.

An electric stair lift can go by many names. Some people recognize one as a stair chair lift. To clarify, a stair chair lift is the same thing as a home stair lift or an electric stair lift . A stair chair lift can also come in many models from a few different stair chair lift manufacturers. Use Electroease to find out all you need to know about how a stair chair lift will benefit you or a loved one. We’re confident that an electric stair lift will be one of the best investments you’ve made in a while.

WHAT IS A STAIR LIFT

A stair lift is a chair attached to a track that is bolted down onto a staircase. There are no structural changes made to the home. The lift can be used for carrying a person, laundry, groceries, or luggage up and down the stairs with a push of a button. Popular convenience features include swivel seats that turn away from the staircase, remote controls that send or call the lift to another floor, and a folding track at the lower landing to make the most out of small hallway space. The lifts plug into standard household outlets. Stair lifts can be placed on either side of the staircase.

WHY DO I NEED A STAIR LIFT?

  1. Relieves the concern about the safety and comfort of your loved ones when you can't always be by their side.

  2. Provides peace of mind that a loved one you are caring for will not fall down the stairs. Your loved one can enjoy all the comforts and amenities of the home they have grown to love over the years.

  3. A stair lift will make your life, and the life of the person you are caring for, easier and safer for years to come.

  4. Low cost alternative when stairs become an obstacle. When you compare the cost of adding a room to the first floor, moving to an assisted living center, or purchasing a one-story home, a stair lift is by far the most economical choice.

  5. Stair lifts can be used for carrying things up and down a staircase, such as groceries, laundry, or luggage.

  6. Walking up and down the stairs is one of the leading causes of falls in the home for people of any age.

  7. Great solution if walking up and down stairs is a temporary obstacle.

Dramatically reduces the wear and tear on ankles, knees, and hip joints. Saves joint use for the activities you love to do.

HOW ilN I AFFORD A STAIR LIFT?

There are many ways to finance a stair lift including loans, grants, financing offered by dealers, home equity loans, or reverse mortgages. Below is information on several options.

  •  Area Agency on Aging: Some area Agencies on Aging use funds from the Older Americans Act Title III to modify homes. To locate the area Agency on Aging in your community, call the Eldercare Locator at (800) 677-1116 or visitwww.n4a.org.

  • Banks and Lenders: Some banks offer loans to finance home modification projects such as building ramps, installing lifts, widening doors, or lowering cabinets. Banks and lending agencies also offer reverse mortgages that allow homeowners to turn the value of their home into cash. Contact the local banking and lending organizations for more information. Free counseling on reverse mortgages is available from a HUD*-approved housing counseling agency. Call (888)466-3487 for a referral. (*HUD - U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.)

  • Department of Housing and Community Development: Many cities and towns use Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) to help maintain and upgrade homes. Contact the local Department for more information. A listing of Housing and Community Development Agencies can be found by visitingwww.nahro.org/reference/internethousing.cfm or calling the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials toll free at (877) 866-2476.

  • Federal Housing Administration (FHA): The FHA, which is part of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), administers mortgage insurance programs (e.g., Title 1 and Section 203(k)) that can help homebuyers and homeowners secure loans to make home modifications. For more information, contact the regional HUD field office listed in the telephone directory, visit www.dtinational.org/training/hudinfo/hudoffices.asp or call (202) 708-1112. The local FHA-lender can be found by visiting www.hud.gov/ll/code/llplcrit.html.

  • Health Insurance Some private health insurance and long term care insurance plans also pay for limited home modifications. Check with your insurance provider.

  • Internal Revenue Service (IRS): If the home modifications meet certain conditions, they may be tax deductible. Part of the expense of installing lifts may be deductible if they increase the resale value of the property and have been prescribed as medically necessary. Consult a tax professional and order a free copy of IRS Publication 502 for more information. Contact the IRS by visiting www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p502.pdf or call (800) 829-3676.

STAIR LIFT FAQ

  • Can a stair lift handle any stair lift configuration?

  •  Stair lifts can be configured to handle any staircase. Most staircases are either straight, have a middle landing, or are curved/spiral. In some cases, a customer who has a middle landing can put 2 stair lifts in, one on the first set of steps and the other on the second set.

  • Do I need to do anything special to prepare the home for a stair lift?

  • Not really, unless you don't have an electrical outlet to support the operation of the stair lift. In this case, you would need an electrician to install an outlet before the stair lift is installed. In some cases, the stair rail might need to be removed if it obstructs the operation of the stair lift.

  • How is the stair lift secured to the home?

  • The stair lift is bolted down directly into the staircase. It requires rail brackets about every 3-4 ft.

  • What is the difference between A/C and BOS? What are the pros and cons?

  • An A/C unit is operated from the standard household outlet. If the electricity goes out, the stair lift will not operate. There are no ongoing costs to support the operation of this unit like there are with the BOS.

  •  A BOS (Battery Operated System) is operated by standard 12V batteries. The BOS will operate if there is an electrical power failure for as long as the batteries last (typically 10 trips). Batteries for these lifts need to be changed annually. Typical cost for 12V batteries are $50-$75. 12V batteries are similar to those that operate children's Barbie or play cars driven on driveways.

  • Will my stair lift operate if the power goes out?

  • An A/C operated unit will not operate after the power of the house is terminated. A BOS (Battery Operated System) will work for a limited time.

  • How much space does a stair lift use?

  • When not in use, the lift can be folded up, maximizing space on the staircase for others. It takes up about 14" when folded and typically opens to about 25".

  • Will a stair lift work for someone who also uses a wheelchair?

  • Stair lifts can be useful even for someone who has limited mobility. Convenience features built into some models include folding arms that push up and out of the way, adjustable seat heights, and soft, padded seats.

  • How will the stair lift look in my home?

  • You can typically choose from a wide variety of colors and fabrics. Upholstery options include easy-to-care for vinyl and fabric. Chair and track colors can be chosen to blend with most home décors.

  • What about safety features?

  • Key safety features on most stair lifts include a seat belt, obstruction sensors that will stop the lift should something block its path, a swivel seat lock that holds the unit in place while you get on or off. Constant pressure controls ensure the lift will stop if you release your finger from the controls.

  • Are stair lifts easy to care for?

  • Yes. Stair lifts are designed to last for many years. Most stair lifts come with a manufacturer's warranty.

  • Can a stair lift accommodate any user weight?

  • Most stair lifts handle up to a 300 lb capacity. Some manufacturers offer stair lifts up to 375 lb capacity.
